Pet Sematary is the Crystal Pepsi of horror remakes. The concept sounded like a great idea on paper and fans got behind the release based on the initial trailer, but in reality, the execution of the concept was lackluster at best. It’s a shame because this could have been something so much greater had they at least roughly stuck to what worked in the original. However, we live in a day and age where with every remake that directors seem driven to add their twist. Hell, Little was in large part a direct rip off of both the Big and Freaky Friday storylines. However, if you were to ask the director of the soon to be released “homage” to Big, he would say that there are differences between the two.
Pet Sematary spends a majority of the film is hyperfocused on character development at the expense of plot development. Imagery and setting are two crucial elements of any horror film (especially this remake). Instead of investing time in developing the actual eerie components associated with the film, we are treated to writer Matt Greenberg’s need to go on about the Reed family’s backstory. On top of that, we have to find out Jud’s (John Lithgow) motivation (not that it’s even remotely necessary to the plot of the film).
What we have in the end is a disjointed plot that for any who saw the original Pet Sematary will end up driving you insane. If you, however, have not seen the original then this poor attempt at capturing the magic of the original is acceptable … I guess.
