The Righteous Gemstones

‘The Righteous Gemstones’ Season One Episode One Review: It Was Glorious

The Righteous Gemstones brilliantly skewers the hypocrisy found in some areas of Christianity. Danny Mcbride wrote and directed the first episode which introduced to the Gemstones (your basic stereotypical televangelist family except this family has some skeletons in the closet). It was a brilliant mix of the comedy that McBride is famous for and a social commentary which certainly speaks loudly in today’s world. While I love Succession, HBO has undoubtedly got a comedic hit on their hands. Here are four takeaways from last night’s episode.

4. Adam Devine and Danny McBride are a perfect pair.

While at first, it seemed as if the comedic pairing might be a bit off, these two quickly showed why they have such great chemistry. That scene at the wave pool when they are performing 5,000 baptisms was just hysterical, and these two made that scene pop (oh and the waves helped as well)

4. Edi Patterson will be the breakout star of this series.

Patterson’s portrayal of the displaced Gemstone sister had me in stitches as well. It also provided a bit of commentary about the perception of a woman by some who claim to be of faith as well. While some will be focusing on the three gentlemen, she’s the one who will stand out (loved how she would always hide her boyfriend out of fear her dad would find him at their house on the compound)

2. Perfect Casting!

You couldn’t get three more different looking people, but it was easy to buy that they were all part of the Gemstone family. Their flamboyance is what sold it for me. Loved the little touches they had for each (whether it was Devine’s use of prayer hands … the coat on the shoulders or Goodman’s pinky ring).

1. While the first episode indeed focused on Mcbride’s character and the incident in Atlanta, something tells me that Eli has a few dark moments ahead.

While the first episode focuses an awful lot of Jesse Gemstone, it would not surprise if Eli has a Jim Bakker moments in a future episode. If Mcbride is going to skewer the church, then he has to be next.

Overall, The Righteous Gemstones was a ton of fun and well worth checking out. Right now and can be found on HBOGo. Catch up so that you are ready for next week!
